Hot and Texas go hand-in-hand, and one of the most popular ways to beat the heat in Texas is a home pool. Harris County Municipal Utility District 249’s Board of Directors encourages families to enjoy their at-home pools while conserving water.
Here are five simple tips District residents can use to minimize their pools’ water consumption:

Maintain your pool
Maintaining proper pool chemistry can help residents ensure that their water is safe to swim in and reduce how often pool water must be drained. Reviewing the instructions provided by the pool’s manufacturer and following the chemical requirements closely can prevent the expense of draining and refilling the pool.

Keep all filters clean
According to Leslie’s Pools, the average pool backwash cycle can use between 250 and 1,000 gallons of water. Only backwash when necessary and make certain that filters are clean to avoid having to backwash more than is absolutely necessary. Recycle backwash water by using it to water your lawn, trees and shrubs.

Reduce the pool’s temperature
Using a cooling pump to lower a pool’s temperature reduces water loss due to evaporation. Cooling pumps may reduce the pool’s temperature by as much as 15 degrees.

Avoid overfilling the pool
Fill the pool up only to the manufacturer’s recommended maximum depth. Overfilling the pool may increase water loss due to splashing when the pool is in use. If your pool has an autofill feature, ensure that it is properly set to avoid overfilling the pool.

Use a solar cover to prevent evaporation
A solar cover is a solid, floating cover for your pool that prevents debris from entering the pool and prevents water loss through evaporation. Using a solar cover on your pool can reduce evaporation by as much as 50 percent.
